NPPL Microlight

Qualification

The NPPL Microlight (without operational limitations) course, consists of a minimum of 25 hours flying which we offer in a two seater Ikarus C42, which is a conventional 3 Axis Microlight.

On successful completion of the course, exams and tests, you will apply for and then be issued with a licence from the BMAA/CAA. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) specifies a minimum of 25 hours flying training. This must include 10 hours of supervised solo of which 3 hours must be solo navigational flights i.e. away from your home-based airfield.

A Medical Declaration is required prior to flying solo which is obtained through your own GP.

Pre-course requirements

You must be a minimum of 17 years old to obtain your licence. (You may start training from the age of 14). In order to fly solo the student must be at least 16 years of age and be the holder of a Medical Declaration Certificate which can be issued by your own GP.

Training

The flying lessons consist of exercises taken from the syllabus and designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge for your first solo flight (on average around 15 hours of training) however, depending on the individual and extenuating circumstances, this can take considerably longer. Examples of the exercises are aircraft familiarisation, climbing, descending, turning, slow flight and circuits. After this, you will move on to steep turns, emergency drills and instrument flying which, in turn, lead on dual and solo navigational tasks. Each lesson concludes with a clearly defined exercise planned for your next booking. Initially, the duration of each flying lesson is about an hour in the air. As you progress through the syllabus, the exercises may require 2+ hours of actual flying time.

Most of your training is preparing you for the two solo Qualifying Cross Country routes – two different 40 nm return routes each landing at an airfield away at least 15 nm away from home.

The final task to qualify for the licence is the Skills Test – a practical flying test consisting of general handling of the aircraft and navigation together with an aircraft type oral exam.

Theory

The theory element of NPPL training includes 5 ‘multiple-choice’ styled exams which, issued by the CAA:-

  • Aviation Law, Flight Rules & Procedures
  • Human Performance & Limitations
  • Navigation
  • Meteorology
  • Aircraft General

Apart from Air Law, which must be passed before your first solo flight, there is no correct order in which to do the exams. All theory exams, however, must be passed within 24 months prior to the Skills Test.
