The night rating is a great addition to your PPL. The course is only 5 hours long, of which 3 hours must be completed with an instructor. You will also have to complete 5 take-offs and landings at night – solo.

You will complete night circuits, navigation and emergencies and whilst there is no official ground school requirement for this rating, your instructor will guide you through the various human performance, air law and technical aspects of flight at night.

There are no flight tests or exams involved but the course must be completed within 6 months of the first night flight training exercise.

On completion of the night rating you will be entitled to fly between official night and official day (30 minutes after sunset, and 30 minutes before sunrise respectively). This can provide amazing views, as well as providing more variety and experience to your flying.

A night rating can also be invaluable if you get delayed during a flight and need to land at night, rather than having to divert to a different airport.

For those thinking of becoming a professional pilot, it is a pre-requisite for the granting of a commercial pilots licence (CPL).
